Be Prepared Before a Storm

Storms are a blessing and curse to Northern California. California lacks consistent precipitation and due to dry conditions caused by the lack of rainfall, storms can evidently create more problems, such as mudslides, down trees, and downed power lines. Below are a few suggestions to stay safe during a storm.
- Watch for signs of storms and stay up to date with weather apps to track the storms progress in your area
- Do the kind thing when safe and check on your neighbors. families with babies, the elderly, and people with disabilities are all at a higher risk due to the nature of their situation.
- Take shelter in a sturdy building, preferably away from windows and objects that can fall and trap you such as entertainment centers. Remove all hanging decorations on your porch or deck to minimize the potential for broken windows.
- Unplug all major utilities such as stoves, refrigerators, and precious electronics. Telephone lines and metal pipes are conductive, so it is best to unplug anything that is not needed to track the weather.
- Assemble an emergency ready kit. This will insure you have some necessary items such as flashlights, emergency contacts, water, and food. Being prepared always helps in the event of an emergency.
